A Quick 10 Minute Meal - Shrimp Somen

Song:  Intermeco

Shrimp Somen...
a very delicious and nutritious meal...
which may be made in about 10 minutes.

First...
what is somen?

It is a very thinly made wheat noodle favored by the Japanese (as well as other Asians).

It is usually served cold with a somen sauce...
chopped green onions, and wasabi.

You may put in any kind of meat you desire...
but for the high protein and ease of preparation...
I like pre-cooked frozen shrimp.

The basic ingredients:

Somen noodles

Pre-cooked and frozen shrimp

Somen sauce

Chopped green onions

Wasabi

You will notice the time here and in later shots.

Although on this night it took about 45 minutes to finish the preparation...
it was only because we had to stop a couple of times and wait.

I was putting together paperwork in preparation for tomorrow
(I have to get some documents signed).

I can make this meal in about 10 minutes.

We bought these noodles at an Asian market.

Although they are Korean noodles...
they are the same as somen noodles.

These noodles cook much more quickly than regular pasta.

It takes just minutes...
perhaps 3 - 5...depending on your altitude.

The noodles are draining...
and the shrimp are waiting to be defrosted.

Be sure to soak the shrimp in hot water beforehand...
and to run cold water over the noodles before you drain them.

My mother defrosted the shrimp in 30 seconds by putting them in a bowl
and filling it with hot water from the hot pot.

Often times...
ice cubes are mixed in the noodles to chill them.

Just rinsing the draining noodles under the cold water faucet is fine.

Add wasabi to taste...
but you must be sure to mix it in thoroughly in the sauce.

It is quite a rude awakening to eat a mouthful of noodles which
has a clump of undissolved wasabi hidden in them.

Mix all of the ingredients together...

and there you have it.

This is a perfect quick, easy, and light meal.

You may decide on how many shrimp you put in...
to have anything from a snack...to a full meal.

This meal is also very inexpensive to make.
