Sprouts For Health

Song:  Bolero

Orchestra:  Berliner Philharmoniker

Just look for this particular model of sprouter on Amazon.

It sells in a full starter pack of 3 trays and 4 covers.
It allows full drainage, and is very easy to use.
It sells for around $30.00 for the starter pack.

The following photos are of my sprouter.
It is the same model as the one above.

The trays easily stack.

After a couple of days...
they start to sprout.

Usually by the fourth or fifth day...
they are ready to be harvested.

All you need do is rinse them off to remove any unsprouted seeds
(although, I do not rinse away the unsprouted seeds)...
and store them in a sealable pyrex container...
or in a sandwich bag...
and place them in your refrigerator
(they usually last 4 - 5 days).

To have a continuous supply...
simply stagger the filling of the trays so that
your next harvest comes just as you are about to run out
of the previous harvest.

I usually eat them with no other vegetables...
just a large handful of sprouts in a salad bowl...
and I usually eat them with a nice Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing mixed in.

Now...
why sprouts as opposed to merely a green salad?

First of all...
there are enormous benefits to the nutritional and phytonutrient content of sprouts...
without the worry of insecticides/herbacides/fungacides
used on so much of today's produce.

Health Benefits of Broccoli

  • New broccoli sprout study shows benefits carry into the offspring's adulthood. Eating broccoli sprouts during pregnancy may provide your kids with life-long protection against cardiovascular disease, according to a research team led by Bernhard Juurlink at the University of Saskatchewan.
  • Broccoli packs a powerful punch to bladder cancer cells, according to new information from Ohio State University.
  • Broccoli may bolster the body's defences against heart disease and stroke.
  • The original press release on broccoli sprouts and cancer prevention.
  • Now cholesterol too? A study from Japan shows that 1 cup of broccoli sprouts a day for 1 week lowers bad cholesterol, increases good.
  • Broccoli sprouts may be useful to protect retina? A study shows protection of retina in mice. Very technical.
  • Broccoli sprouts may sooth airway inflammation.
  • Sulforaphane found in broccoli sprouts may rejuvenate the immune system. This article in Science Daily gives details. According to a study by the National Academy of Sciences, sulforaphane found in broccoli sprouts may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular problems of hypertension and atherosclerosis.

The Sulforaphane content in broccoli sprouts is 50x the amount in full grown broccoli.

From the web:

Sprouts truly are the best locally-grown food, yet not enough people eat or grow them. Considering there many health and environmental benefits, it’s time to consider adding sprouts to your diet. Here are 10 reasons to eat more sprouts:
1.  Experts estimate that there can be up to 100 times more enzymes in sprouts than uncooked fruits and vegetables.  Enzymes are special types of proteins that act as catalysts for all your body’s functions. Extracting more vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids from the foods you eat ensures that your body has the nutritional building blocks of life to ensure every process works more effectively.
2.  The quality of the protein in the beans, nuts, seeds, or grains improves when it is sprouted.  Proteins change during the soaking and sprouting process, improving its nutritional value.  The amino acid lysine, for example, which is needed to prevent cold sores and to maintain a healthy immune system increases significantly during the sprouting process.
3.  The fiber content of the beans, nuts, seeds, or grains increases substantially.  Fiber is critical to weight loss.  It not only binds to fats and toxins in our body to escort them out, it ensures that any fat our body breaks down is moved quickly out of the body before it can resorb through the walls of the intestines (which is the main place for nutrient absorption into the blood).
4.  Vitamin content increases dramatically.  This is especially true of vitamins A, B-complex, C, and E.  The vitamin content of some seeds, grains, beans, or nuts increases by up to 20 times the original value within only a few days of sprouting.  Research shows that during the sprouting process mung beansprouts (or just beansprouts, as they are often called) increase in vitamin B1 by up to 285 percent, vitamin B2 by up to 515 percent, and niacin by up to 256 percent.
5.  Essential fatty acid content increases during the sprouting process. Most of us are deficient in these fat-burning essential fats because they are not common in our diet.  Eating more sprouts is an excellent way to get more of these important nutrients.
6.  During sprouting, minerals bind to protein in the seed, grain, nut, or bean, making them more useable in the body.  This is true of alkaline minerals like calcium, magnesium, and others than help us to balance our body chemistry for weight loss and better health.
7.  Sprouts are the ultimate locally-grown food. When you grow them yourself you are helping the environment and ensuring that you are not getting unwanted pesticides, food additives, and other harmful fat-bolstering chemicals that thwart your weight loss efforts.
8.  The energy contained in the seed, grain, nut, or legume is ignited through soaking and sprouting.
9.  Sprouts are alkalizing to your body.  Many illnesses including cancer have been linked to excess acidity in the body.
10.  Sprouts are inexpensive. People frequently use the cost of healthy foods as an excuse for not eating healthy.  But, with sprouts being so cheap, there really is no excuse for not eating healthier.

More evidence that spicing up broccoli boosts its cancer-fighting power

Teaming fresh broccoli with a spicy food that contains the enzyme myrosinase significantly enhances each food's individual cancer-fighting power and ensures that absorption takes place in the upper part of the digestive system where you'll get the maximum health benefit, suggests a new University of Illinois study.
"To get this effect, spice up your broccoli with broccoli sprouts, mustard, horseradish, or wasabi. The spicier, the better; that means it's being effective," said Elizabeth Jeffery, a U of I professor of nutrition.
In the study, when fresh broccoli sprouts were eaten with broccoli powder, the scientists were able to measure bioactive compounds in the blood 30 minutes later. When these peaked at three hours, they were much higher when the foods were eaten together than when either was eaten alone. Urine samples corroborated the blood results, said Jenna Cramer, lead author of the study.
It's no secret that many people cook the benefits right out of broccoli instead of steaming it lightly for two to four minutes to protect its healthful properties, she said.
"However, this study shows that even if broccoli is overcooked, you can still boost its benefits by pairing it with another food that contains myrosinase," she said.
Myrosinase is the enzyme necessary to form sulforaphane, the vegetable's cancer-preventive component, co-author Margarita Teran-Garcia explained.
Note what happened with the fresh broccoli sprouts and broccoli powder eaten in this experiment. The powder doesn't contain myrosinase, but it does contain the precursor to the anti-cancer agent sulforaphane. Eaten together, the sprouts were able to lend their myrosinase to the powder. As predicted, both foods produced sulforaphane and provided greater anti-cancer benefit, Jeffery said.
Other foods that will boost broccoli's benefits if they are paired together include radishes, cabbage, arugula, watercress, and Brussels sprouts.
"Here's another benefit of protecting and enhancing the myrosinase in your foods," Jeffery said. "If myrosinase is present, sulforaphane is released in the ilium, the first part of your digestive system. Absorption happens well and quickly there, which is why we saw bioactivity in 30 minutes."
An earlier Jeffery study showed that microbiota are capable of releasing sulforaphane in the lower gut, but absorption happens more slowly in the colon than in the upper intestine, she said.
Scientists say that as little as three to five servings of broccoli a week provide a cancer-protective benefit.
"But it pays to spice it up for added benefits and find ways to make it appealing so you don't mind eating it if you're not a broccoli fan. I add fresh broccoli sprouts to sandwiches and add them as one of my pizza toppings after the pie is out of the oven," Cramer said.

-------------------

In summation of my article...
smart eating is finding a way to make the nutritious...
delicious.

---------------

I make a batch of 2 of broccoli to 1 of Daikon sprouts.

The great benefits of the broccoli sprouts
are further multiplied by the Daikon sprouts.

It fulfills the qualification of the above article...
as well as making the sprouts zesty...
and especially tasty.

Miso dressing on top is now my favorite way of eating
this sprout salad.

It is also the perfect winter vegetable as it grows
indoors...and provides nonstop healthful greens
at anytime without needing to go to the grocery store.

It is the perfect survival food as it has an
abundance of vitamin C as well as having
an abundance of other healthful nutrients
ready at hand as they are stored as seeds which
 sprout in under a week.

-----------------

If it is too...
expensive...
troublesome...
tasteless...
it won't be eaten.

If you don't eat a healthful diet for a lifetime...
it does you no good.

Another great benefit to eating sprouts...
it helps regulate the bowel...
not just from feeding the beneficial intestinal flora...
but through the increased roughage...
especially if you don't remove the hulls and the extra seeds
from the sprouts before eating them  :)
(as I do not...just for this reason).

I have since bought an automatic sprouter:

An Inexpensive, Quick, And Healthful Meal - I

Song:  Bolero

Performing Orchestra Conducted By:  Andre Rieu

Before I go into the first of this series
of inexpensive, quick, and healthful meals...
on this evening, my mother took her first neighborhood walk since moving here.

We have been spending our time shopping and furnishing her new home...
so, today was our first walk here.

The air was crisp and refreshing.
Just down her street is this city lookout point (telephoto was used).
At night, all of Reno may be seen from here.

There is a 360 degree view from here of all the mountains.

I had Hana's leash as my mother walked along behind us.

Now...
I will be including some very easy meals for senior citizens to make.

This Frozen Tuna sells for $14.75 a lb.
It is almost always sold in Asian markets.

However...
it may be bought in smaller sizes.

One lb of Tuna will feed a family of 5...
or 3 - 4 hungry adults.

All fish bought in stores...
or served in all Sushi restaurants...
unless it was caught and sold from local fishermen off the docks...
is frozen.

If you choose to eat raw fish...
be sure it had been frozen.

This kills any parasites which may have infected the fish.

This includes any ocean or freshwater fish.

You simply store it in your freezer...
then thaw in a pan of warm water...
slice it, and you have...

Sashimi.

With just some rice, wasabi (Japanese horseradish paste)...
and soy sauce...
and any vegetables you desire...
you have a high protein...
nutritious and delicious meal.

Another advantage of this is that you may store many pounds of frozen tuna
in your freezer for a quick meal any time.

*Note that the beer my mother and I drink is...O'douls (non - alcoholic).

As there was plenty of Tuna left...
my mother had given some to her dog...Hana.

You could always grill the rest and store it in your refrigerator for consumption
in salads, sandwiches, or in a variety of other dishes.

It is also good by itself with rice.

--------------

*Note the large container in the picture.
It is a dog food container which holds 50 lbs of dog food.

It is on wheels...
and it is perfect for storing rice.

It will easily store over 100 lbs of rice.
The lid locks and seals the contents.
It was very inexpensive at Walmart.

Hana has the same container for her dog food...
except that it stores half the amount.

-------------

Another great food product is sprouts.

I will devote my next article just to sprouts.

My mother has several lbs. of sprout seeds in one of her kitchen cabinets.

Specifically...
Broccoli and Daikon (Japanese Radish) sprouting seeds.

There is a specific reason for these particular seeds...
I will explain the reason in my next article.

They are easily bought off of Amazon.

I will also show a very good seed sprouter in the later article.

The first step for sprouting seeds...
is to soak the needed amount in water overnight.

For the particular sprouter my mother has...
just two tablespoons of seeds per tray is enough.

The first tablespoon is of the Daikon sprout seeds.

The second tablespoon is of Broccoli sprout seeds.

Just put them into a small bowl and fully submerge them in water overnight.

My next article will provide evidence for the great value of sprouts
(nutritionally and monetarily).

My Mother's Exercise Program

Song:  Zombie

Group:  The Cranberries

A person who foregoes training of the body...
who, instead, lives a sedentary lifestyle...
never experiences the full richness of life.

Just a few months ago...
my mother was merely existing.

She had settled into a zombie like cycle of watching TV...
eating junk food...
and sleeping poorly.

She merely stayed in her house...
rarely venturing out.

Three months ago...
I had invited her from her California home to my home in Reno, NV...
to allow me to train her in the basic three of good health
(Nutritious and Delicious Diet / Exercise / Deep Restorative Sleep).

She had awakened from the land of the walking dead...
and started to really live life.

My mother is 76 years old...
and she had never engaged in any long term exercise program...
in her life.

She came to me 20 lbs overweight...
physically weak...her balance poor...
and with no real lust for life.

I had placed her on a very simple program of weight training
twice a week (one day for the lower body...one day for the upper body)...
and, initially, a simple night walk three times a week...
which I then cut back to twice a week as she was losing weight too quickly
(she had lost 20 lbs in two months).

The focus of this article is her exercise program.

In later articles...
I shall delve into her diet.

The most basic and result producing weight training consists of
exercising the largest muscles of the body.

For her Sunday training...
I have her do Trap Bar Deadlifts.

For all of her weight training...
I do the same type of training:

Singles for 10 - 25 sets for each exercise.

I just have her do two exercises for each of the two days a week
she trains with weights.

Sunday:

Trap Bar Deadlifts

Pull Ups (on an incline board)

Thursday:

Bench Press

Bent Over Rows

The program is very simple:

Start with approximately 80% of the comfortable max weight as a starting point.

Do a single repetition of one exercise...
do the next exercise for a single repetition...
rest for 1 minute.

This is one set.

For the starting point for the particular weight...
do ten sets...and that is it.

With each successive week...
add three sets until 25 sets are completed.

For the following session...
add 5% of the weight to the bar...
and take the sets back down to 10 as the set starting point.

This is the schedule:

Week 1:  10 sets
Week 2:  13 sets
Week 3:  16 sets
Week 4:  19 sets
Week 5:  22 sets
Week 6:  25 sets

Add 5% weight - Week 1:  10 sets and work your way back up.

The cycle will continuously repeat...
until you feel you haven't fully adapted to the exercise.

If this is the case...
take a week or two off weight training...
and resume where you had left off.

Also...
in all movements...always...
exhale as you exert...
inhale at the top of the exercise...
exhale as you put the weight down
(you should always have your lungs half full at the end of each exhalation...
you risk passing out if you fully exhale).

This applies to all of the weight training exercises.

Sunday's Routine

----------------------

(my 14 year old son...Alex...spotting his grandmother on her bench presses)

Thursday's routine

Why these particular exercises?

The Standard Deadlift is one of the lifts which exercises all of the major muscles
of the body...while allowing for maximal weight to be used...
which in turn...allows for maximum benefit for the whole body.

However...
the line of force applied is offset from the center of the weights.
This results in tremendous sheer forces on the lower back.

The Trap Bar Deadlift

Besides exercising all of the largest muscles of the body at once...
it keeps the force used...in line with the weight.

The Trap Bar Dead Lift allows even more weight to be lifted...
without the tremendous shearing forces on the lower back...
not only making this a safer exercise to do...
but as it allows even more weight to be lifted...
it does even more good for the whole body.

The Pull Up

This exercises the largest upper body muscles in opposition
to those being exercised by the Trap Bar Deadlift.

It is important to keep the body balanced in strength in opposing muscle groups.
Posture can be adversely affected otherwise.

The Bench Press

This exercises the largest muscles of the upper body which push.

The Bent Over Row

This exercises the muscle groups in direct opposition to the Bench Press.

Also...
The Trap Bar Deadlift and The Bent Over Rows...
strengthen the muscles which bring the shoulders back...
and in line with good posture.

The Pull Ups keep the shoulders back and down...
and strengthen the pulling muscles as well.

Now...
on to the night walks.

Merely start out walking at a leisurely pace...
and for as far as one feels comfortable...
then turn around and walk back
(start out with an empty rucksack on if you can).

With each successive night walk...
add one street light's distance to the walk out.

Work up to approximately 2 miles.

When you can do the 2 miles...
add one fistful of sand to the rucksack after each walk...
or after each week of walking
(use a laundry bag as a liner).

Over a period of many months...
you will be walking with many pounds of sand...
and the effort expended will feel no different than you had felt at the beginning.

Why the sand filled rucksack night walks?

When an appreciable amount of weight is carried for 1 - 2 miles...
it also greatly strengthens the whole body (aerobically as well)...
as well as greatly stimulating the skeletal system to grow much more dense.

Now...
why night walks as opposed to morning walks?

This ties in to weight loss and deep restorative sleep.

How so?

First of all...
eat nothing for a good 6 hours, or so, before you bed down for the night
(with the exception of immediately after weight training.
One small protein drink (high protein Ensure) is okay...
and will help with recovery).

Drink only water after your last meal until you go to sleep.
Never drink any caffeinated or sugary (even diet) drinks...
just water.

Approximately two hours before you are to sleep...
exercise, stretch, and take a hot shower.

Your body is now primed for a relaxed and deeply restorative night of sleep.

Exercise drains excess energy and stress from the body and mind.

In addition...
exercise dramatically raises the metabolic rate...
especially in the thermic response of the body
(the body is producing much more heat...
which is countered by flooding the capillaries near the skin
to rid itself of the excess heat.  You become a little radiator of heat.
This is what burns most of the calories continually for many hours afterwards).

Now...
with having had no food for six or so hours before going to bed...
and after exerting yourself for 45 minutes to an hour...
the body's store of glucose (stored in the liver as Glycogen)...
and in the muscles of the body...
is about used up.

As your body continually burns calories all through the night
at a dramatically raised rate due to the exercise...
the body is forced to release more calories from its fat stores.

This is the most effective means of losing fat.

1)  Do not consume calories within 6, or so, hours of bedtime.

2)  Do a continual aerobic exercise for 45 minutes to an hour
(walking is gentle and effective)...
just before bed time.

3)  Hydrate...but consume no calories afterwards.

4)  Stretch, take a hot shower, and go to bed.

My 76 year old mother, who was 20 pounds over weight...
had lost 20 lbs of fat in two months doing just this.

She had also gained in strength...
energy, and had a greatly elevated mood.

As you increase the amount of weight used in weight training...
you will gain some weight due to the fact that muscle is heavier than fat...
however, you will lose even more fat...
as muscle is far more highly active (burns calories).

This will result in your posture improving...
and your body shape filling out in all the right places...
and the slimming down of the fat which is in all the wrong places.

Conversely...
a major cause of obesity is by eating too near bedtime.

With the metabolic rate slowing down while you sleep...
and with the addition of many calories...
and with the liver stocked with glycogen with no more room to store any more...
it is stored directly as fat.

You WILL continually add pounds this way.

Do the opposite...
and you will continually shed pounds of fat...
and you will sleep much better.

However...
if like in the case of my mother...
you start to lose more than 10 lbs a month...
take out one of the night walks a week.

Losing weight too quickly is not good.
You want your skin to be able to conform to your new shape
in tandem with your weight loss.

--------------------

Recap:

Especially for the elderly...
the eventual lifting/carrying of an appreciable amount of weight must be the goal...
if they are to protect their bones from Osteoporosis...
 prevent Muscle Insulin Resistant Diabetes...
 prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis
(and the full or mini strokes associated with it)...
and to keep their bodies mobile and strong enough
to be able to dance the night away...
until their final slumber takes them away...
still sharp of mind...and strong of body.
