The Long Way Around To Mel's Diner

Song:  Take The Long Way Home

Group:  Supertramp

I had originally planned to take my mother and younger sister to Stampede Reservoir...
and then on the way back...
stop in at Mel's diner for some great burgers.

However...
on the way to the reservoir...
two things had happened which made me alter my plans.

First of all...
while there were some clouds in the sky...
it was only raining from the beginning of California...
until just after the reservoirs.

Secondly...
on the other side of the highway...
the one we would have had to drive home on...
there was an accident which had the whole side of the highway closed.

Traffic was backing up...
and there was no way I wanted to wait in backed up traffic on our way to Mel's and home.

So...
instead of going to Stampede Reservoir...
I continued on to Lake Tahoe.

We didn't stop there...
but we enjoyed the views as we drove from the North entrance...
and down to the Eastern Exit to go back to Reno.

We stopped at our favorite Lake Tahoe lookout point...
before continuing on back to Reno.

My younger sister just on the other side of my mother.

Once in Reno...
we continued until we got to Mel's Diner in Boom Town Casino.

Read these specs.

It is just a town street racer.

There is no way one could ride this over the long haul on the highway.

It eats too much gas...way too quickly...
and the heat from this car engine mounted on the bike...
and from the front mounted radiator...
would soon make riding this...hell on earth  :)

We had gone there because they have the best burgers in all of Reno...
and it is one of my late night go to spots when I am really hungry at 2 AM.

My mother had originally ordered lemonade...
but when I had ordered a root beer...
she then said that she wanted one too.

She thought that root beer was an actual beer  :)

So...
she got a Coors beer instead.

This is a good burger.

It is almost half a pound of charbroiled goodness.

It had a great bun...
lots of lettuce...
a thick slice of onion...
and two slices of tomato.

Mel's diner is fashioned after the 1940s and 50s diners...
and as was made famous in the movie...
American Graffiti.

You would think that my younger sister shouldn't be eating this burger...
since she is trying to lose weight.

No...
so long as you don't eat within six to eight hours of bedtime...
and you eat reasonably during the day...
a good burger can be good to have occasionally.

My younger sister has already lost a visible amount of weight...
just from not eating late at night...
and with some light exercise before bedtime.

She will continue losing weight...
but I also don't want her to lose too much at once.

It is all about a complete lifestyle change.

If the change is in any way disagreeable...
it won't stay in place for life.

It is not about taking out delicious food.

It is about enjoying the occasional simple pleasures in life...
and eating a healthful diet...
which is made to be delicious.

I love these juicy burgers.

They use thousand island on the burgers...
which just makes the burger even better.

We each had ordered one of these burgers.

My mother had almost finished the whole burger
(I had eaten the last bite).

She had eaten a large lunch just six hours prior.

She can normally eat a whole one...with room left over.

After my burger...
I was still hungry...
so...
I ordered a hot pastrami sandwich.

We left feeling fully satisfied.

This was the scene as we were leaving to go back home.

We take these little mountain trips every so often.

It is just one of the many simple pleasures of life in Reno.

And...
with Mel's less than 15 minutes away from home...
and with it being open 24 hours...
whenever we just got to have a delicious charbroiled half pound burger...
even at 2 AM...
we can just go and enjoy.

--------------------

I will be making Salmon Asian Spaghetti with a tomato and green onion salad
for supper tomorrow.

I will be taking photos of it.

Actually...
my younger sister had introduced me to this particular salad.

Now...
every so often...
we will eat this particularly delicious salad with our suppers.
