The Japanese Super Food: Salmon Ochazuke

Song:  Time Keepers

Group:  Future World Music

Salmon Ochazuke:

High in protein

High in healthful cold water fish oils

Good balance of protein to carbohydrate

Highly digestible

Inexpensive

Quick and easy to make

The main ingredients may be cooked ahead of time

Large quantities of the full ingredients may be stocked up for use anytime

Ingredients:

These wild caught salmon fillets are inexpensive at any Super Walmart...
and many lbs of it may be stocked in the freezer.

As a protein source...
it is very difficult to find any better.

Although I prefer to eat my Salmon Ochazuke with skinless salmon...
my mother is now buying the on skin variety...
as her dog, Hana, not only loves the cooked salmon skin...
it is very beneficial for her fur.

These Ochazuke packets are inexpensive...
and may be gotten in almost any Asian market...
or on Amazon.

Get yourself a hot water dispenser...
it makes the whole day so much easier.

A good rice cooker will also make cooking much easier.

So...
there you have it:

Salmon

Rice

Ochazuke packets (they come with powdered tea...just add hot water)

Hot water

 To start...
simply remove the desired number of salmon fillets from the freezer
(they come individually sealed)...
and place them into a bowl filled with hot tap water.

In 10 - 15 minutes...
they are fully defrosted...
and ready to dry pan fry
(use no oils...just grill them on non-stick cookware).

For this particular meal...
I had two salmon fillets...
and my mother had one.

Merely put the stove on medium heat and place a cover over the pan.

Every few minutes...
simply turn them over.

They should not burn or dry out.

The meat should be moist and flakey when fully done.

Of course...
the thickness of each piece will determine how long they will take to fully cook...
however, these particular cuts of salmon usually take less than 10 minutes.

Be sure you thoroughly wash any plate or implement
which had contact with the raw fish before you reuse them.

It is just a basic safe cooking rule
to always separate raw meats from contact with all other foods.

And always use separate cutting boards for meats and other foods.

As the fish is cooking...
you may start warming the rice.

This dish is perfect for using day old rice...
or leftover rice which had been refrigerated.

After the fish is cooked...
place them into a bowl...
and mince them with a new spatula (or the freshly washed old one).

Small bite sized pieces are best.

Take out the warmed rice.

Divide the minced salmon into their serving bowls.

Cover the minced salmon with the rice.

Pour the contents of one of the packets over the rice and minced salmon
(with two salmon fillets...I use three Ochazuke packets).

We have found the spicy Kimchi from Walmart to be some of the tastiest.
It goes very well with Salmon Ochazuke.

Another excellent side dish for this meal...
spicy seasoned dried anchovies.

Then you merely fill the bowl with hot water...
and mix all of the ingredients well...
from top to bottom...
to get an even distribution of the salmon.

You will have a complete meal in but, a very short period...
and if you cook the salmon and rice in a big batch ahead of time...
you will have many days worth of very easy to make meals
(just warm the rice and salmon in the microwave...
pour on the contents of the Ochazuke packets...
add hot water...that is it).

This quick and easy meal...
will be one of the most healthful meals you can make.

This meal may be eaten for Breakfast / Lunch / Supper.

I eat this meal often.

It is so nutritious and delicious...
it is one of my favorite meals.

This meal is particularly beneficial for athletes.

It is not only loaded with high quality protein...
as it is so easily digested...
it will not bog them down in their next workout...
and the carb/protein ratio is superb.

Compared to almost any other meal...
this is rocket fuel.

They will recover from their workouts more quickly and thoroughly.

For the elderly...
this meal is so quickly and easily digested...
that you will have none of the digestive complications
which often arise from red meat heavy meals.

After your first meal of Salmon Ochazuke...
you will be hooked.

You will become such a believer in healthful meals such as this
(instead of lethargy... you will feel full of energy all day)...
you will soon be wearing an 'S' on your shirt
 ('S' standing for Salmon  :)
